What Causes Controller Stick Drift
Stick drift occurs when your character or cursor moves on screen even though you are not touching the analog stick. The most common cause is wear and tear on the potentiometer sensors inside the stick assembly. Over time, the conductive material inside these sensors degrades from friction and contamination.
Dust, debris, and moisture can also find their way into the stick mechanism and interfere with the sensor readings. In some cases, the issue is with the hall-effect sensor or the stick's centering spring becoming weak.
Can You Fix Stick Drift Yourself
There are temporary fixes you can try, including cleaning around the base of the stick with compressed air or contact cleaner, recalibrating the controller through your console's settings, or updating your controller firmware. However, these fixes are usually temporary because they do not address the underlying sensor wear.
For a permanent fix, the analog stick module needs to be replaced. This requires soldering on most controllers and is best left to a professional repair shop with the right tools and experience.
